OutcomesThe Department of Government and History plays an important role in helping students meet the five major competencies of Gallaudet's new General Studies Curriculum: - Language and Communication

The Department has established student learning outcomes (SLOs) for the BA degree programs. The SLOs are available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format (Download Acrobat Reader). Each major has established goals related to the major mission statement: Government Major:Knowledge and skills - Increase understanding of American political history and political processes (major and pre-major students)
- Practice academic skills appropriate to college level courses and college educated people (major and pre-major students)
- Explain core academic information about American and foreign political systems, issues of political theory and ideology, and international relations. (major level students)
- Develop (practice?) skills in the following :
- Reading, understanding, synthesizing and criticizing appropriate professional literature in the major; (major level students)
- Creating research-based projects and presentations in the major using appropriate sources and citation systems. (major level students)
- Understanding, using, producing and critiquing quantitative information in the major. (major level students)
- Understand professional expectations related to:
- Working independently and in groups (major and pre-major students)
- Professional qualifications and education and how they can prepare for and obtain such qualifications and education. (major level students)
Values and citizenship - Become better citizens through understanding the general principles, history and theory of democracy and specifically understanding the evolution of the institutions, processes and policies of the American political system; (major and pre-major students)
- Be aware of the rights and responsibilities of citizens of their community, their country and the wider world. (major and pre-major students)
- Be aware of the ways in which governments impact their lives and the ways in which they can impact government systems. (major and pre-major students)

Public and Deaf Life - Engage in activities outside of the classroom including internships, participation in political campaigns, voter registration drives, mock trials, model United Nations, issue awareness campaigns, study abroad and travel study and other opportunities so that they can learn about the world of politics through active engagement. History ProgramObjectives for General Education Courses
1. Students will identify some significant concepts, events, people, and themes in United States history (111/112) and World Civilization (101/102).
2. Students will describe how historians approach understanding the past.
3. Students will practice critical thinking and reasoning skills.
4. Students will apply historical methods to historical problems.
5. Students will describe diversity within and between cultures.
6. Students will, show the application of historical approaches to problems in written English, American Sign Language, or media applications. Objectives for the History Major (BA)
1. Students will demonstrate breadth and depth of historical understanding of themes and significant events in the three major content areas: American; European; and Asian/African/Latin American.
2. Students will explain the importance of past cultures, societies, and show how changes occurred over time.
3. Students will demonstrate familiarity with the skills of the historical profession:
a) Students will show proof of their ability to contextualize and evaluate primary source evidence
b) Students will formulate effective historical argumentation in written and signed forms.
4. Students will show mastery of the skills needed for a successful career or graduate studies.
a) They will be able to explain the basic methodology and a few theoretical models employed by historians.
b) Students will show extensive writing skills needed for research, proposals, book reviews, etc., as proof of their readiness for advanced study or employment. CareersGovernment Majors:There are a variety of potential careers for those majoring in government. Our graduates have directly gone into a variety of fields: - work with government agencies at the national, state and local levels;
- work in private business;
- work in international agencies and organizations;
- primary and secondary education
- political campaigns and activism
In addition, they have pursued further education and been employed as: - lawyers
- university professors
- researchers
History MajorsHistory majors go on to a variety of careers including: - educators at the primary and secondary level
- Archvists
- staff and leaders in non-governmental associations
- Museum and park staff and adminstrators
- Researchers and writers for various organizations and businesses
- Civil service
History majors pursue a variety of advanced degress as well. The major curriculum assists the development of skills and knowledge for advanced degrees in fields such as law, history, cultural studies and education.
